grad school redux

restak

I'm about to go into the office, because we are holding a department research talk. They are informal presentations of our work in progress (not mine today, thank goodness). I'll go in the spring. Because it's a Friday and none of us teach (mostly), I am going grad school casual. This outfit is very representative of what I wore in grad school. Flat, comfy shoes, leggings, comfortable but short skirts, and layered tops. I even have my scraggly grad school hair (OK, I've been lazy in getting it cut. Everything else seems more pressing, and it's hat weather). I realize this is a sloppier look than many of our more polished readers prefer, but for some reason, intellectual (but not formal) activities make me want to go for shabby, but hopefully still vaguely reflecting my personality. My ma would not approve of this look. I call it my "I spend a lot of time in rooms with books thinking," look.
Do you all ever deliberately go for a more relaxed than normal look, because of the circumstances at your job? Or do you like a little polish at all times in work settings?
I'm excited about the No Repeats challenge. To my M-F friends/blogging buds- enjoy the weekend!

Sweater: Esprit
Skirt: Uniqlo
Shirt: H&M

  1. I love how you layered the stripes underneath, a little bit of pattern is always good.

  2. I think this looks great! Totally appropriate for informal research talks where you want to be comfortable when listening to other people present (or that might be me projecting -- I'm a horrible audience member). And, no surprise here, I love the striped shirt peeking out from under the pullover. I'm also right there with you on needing a haircut. My bangs are almost chin-length!

  3. More love for the stripes peeking out! I'll also third the "I need a haircut."

I think this is completely fine for a Friday spent listening to colleagues' presentations.

  4. I totally do. I dress down to send the "I am one of the academic working class, gotta hide in my office and get shit done" message. Sometimes it works, sometimes my boss barrels in and puts me on a committee anyway.

  5. Lady, I haven't had time to get a hair cut since early October. I had to cancel my November appointment because of business, so I too am rockin' the scraggly hair (which I never did in grad school).

I tend to go more casual for Friday 8am department meetings and for review session days or when I'm showing a film in class but don't have any other meetings.

  6. I tend to fall in the category of making causal into something more formal.
But it's usually just the addition of a few accessories or great shoes that changes up the otherwise low key pieces.

  7. I love the casual "Hot and Smart" thing you've got going on here, Rad. Also, you have departmental research talks? What a great/terrifying idea!

Also (x2), 'just got caught up on your last week of posts here at TCC. I vote for the "adult" pants because of how perfectly the white blouse and wine cardigan go with 'em. But I acknowledge how perfect you look in those skinny jeans: skinny jean wearing is, I've decided, one of your many superpowers.

  8. I really like the layered tops.

I totally had shaggy hair in grad school. I think Ingot one haircut the whole time I was in school.

  9. @Sarah- thanks! I like layering tops too to break up the longer line of my torso.
@E-Jo: I try to be a good audience member, but I think sometimes I don't express my comments as clearly as I'd like. Next time, though.
@K-bean and LaHdM: Hair cut needers of the world- Unite!
@Cynthia: Bummer that it doesn't always work. I wear sweaters with holes in them to school sometimes. I can't even blame GAAD for that.
@LyddieGal: Good call. I think a scarf would have been a good touch her.
@A-Dubs: That's very kind of you, because I feared that I looked more "Sloppy and Crazy" (but the line between that and hot and smart isn't always clear). I am terrified about mine in the spring. Haven't started the paper yet, either.
@Rebecca: Your hair always looks so nice now, I can't imagine you looking shaggy in g-school!

  10. This is a great casual look! And so very Rad. Perfect for sitting around, thinking :)

  11. I love the casual vibe of this - I would wear an outfit like this on the weekend, but I prefer a bit more polished for work (I also only have one more week of work clothes, so I'm going to amp it up a bit!).

Stripes are awesome! and I love your hair messy like this. It looks so effortlessly cool.

  12. Great outfit. I love the layering. I think the disheveled hair is ok and the glasses, but if you do this then you should counteract with a little make up. Or have sleeker more styled hair without make up. The disheveled hair + glasses + no make up+ not being 20 makes it seem less hip and more grandpa ish.
