Halloween

Happy Halloween, Stylenation!  I'm generally pretty bad with Halloween costumes because I don't like buying things that I'll only wear once, and I just lack creativity in that area.  This year I thought about what I could dress up as while still basically dressing like myself, and Liz Lemon from 30 Rock came to mind.  Liz's style typically consists of jeans and sneakers, which I wear a lot more than this blog suggests.

I used this image as my guide.  So I guess technically this would be my first copy cat outfit.  I paired jeans, a t-shirt with a cami underneath, and a very old blazer (I had to dig it out of the basement, and I'm pretty sure the last time I wore it was while interviewing for my job in 2004!) with my Converse low-tops and an old pair of glasses.  My fella described the costume as "Anne with glasses and a blazer."  And that's pretty accurate.

I even have my own gold initial necklace, similar to Liz's.

Fella was similarly non-costumed, dressing up as Mark Zuckerberg.  We saw The Social Network last week and both kind of laughed that Zuckerberg's 2003 college student style was pretty much how Fella dresses to this day.  I guess once you find a style that works, why not stick with it?

Today we're headed to brunch with Fella's parents and then to Graceland Cemetery for a tour.  It sounds a little morbid, but Graceland is full of historical Chicago figures, and it's lead by the Chicago Architecture Foundation so it should be pretty interesting.  Have a nice Halloween, everyone!

T-Shirt: Old Navy
Cami: New York & Company
Blazer: New York & Company (circa 2004)
Jeans: Gap
Shoes: Converse (circa I can't remember)
Necklace: Urban Outfitters
Glasses: Armani (circa 2007)
Chips: Doritos turned Sabor de Soledad

  1. Ha! Love this! And I have to say I loved that moment--though it was so painful to watch and so brilliantly done--when Eduardo calls Zuckerberg out on his "fuck-you hoodie and flip flops". Great movie. I didn't think I'd like it as much as I did though I do wonder about the rampantly obvious misogyny throughout that must have been a choice. I mean, really, I'm pretty sure there are women at Harvard, and in the world for that matter, who are not dim-witted, slutty or batshit crazy.

Favourite line: "I'm 6 foot 5, 212, and there's two of me." (Did you know they were digitally twinned? I sort of feel betrayed by that.) Urgh. We need to have coffee and talk about movies.

Have an awesome Hallowe'en! Sounds like you are doing it up right.

  2. I had the same thought about women in the movie! It seemed like his girlfriend at the beginning had it together, but every other woman we saw was, yes, dim-witted, slutty and/or batshit crazy. I wonder if Rashida Jones' character was supposed to balance that out a bit?

I did know there was only one guy playing the Winklevii before I saw the movie, which made it all that more amazing.

You're a lot more festive than I - will we be seeing your Halloween costume?

  3. I approve of low cost costuming! Even though I'm not such a fan of 30 Rock, I am a fan of your Liz Lemon look. I still haven't seen The Social Network, although I've heard from many reliable sources that it is well worth seeing.

  4. You are an awesome Liz Lemon. I should have been Liz Lelmon, you're Floyd archnemisis! How great is it that you didn't have to buy anything.
I wish the Sabor de Soledad chips were in better focus. Lemon, out!

  5. Ha, what a great costume. I bet we all wear jeans and sneakers a lot more than our blogs let on, don't we.

Speaking of women who are dim-witted, slutty and/or batshit crazy, if I wasn't dressed up as a schleppy college professor grantwriting on a Sunday right now, I would SO be dressed up as another Tina Fey character turn. That's right, none other than Sarah Palin! I think next year will still be plenty of time for a relevant Palin costume, though, and it will be a plenty scary costume in 2012 as well. The awesome thing? All I need is a great lipstick red portrait collar jacket and a coordinating pencil skirt, both items that I would LOVE to have in my wardrobe right now.

  6. I think Rashida Jones was supposed to balance that out but she was such a watered down version of his girlfriend that I think she was ineffective. And she still seemed to be a cringe-worthy tentative and girlish lawyer. I get it, Adam Sorkin, his girlfriend is a smart woman. I will still be able to understand that if there are other smart women in the movie too because, you know, I'm a smart woman. I thought it was interesting--and kind of tv bookended--that the movie pretends that it was all about his girlfriend when the real romance in the movie is the bromance between Eduardo and Zuckerberg.

And the twins were awesomely digitised which makes the extraordinarily bad digitised snow and steam coming from their mouths in the outdoor "winter" shots (obviously filmed on campus in the summer when there are fewer students around) even worse. Still, brilliant performances from the leads. And I even loved JT, which was casting genius.

I'm not doing Hallowe'en this year because I have way too much work. So no costume posts, beyond my 80s dance party retrospective.

  8. Liz, I mean Anne, you are looking fine. My husband has had the same style since forever, once a surfer, always a surfer, even when we go out. He does it well, why mess with it? Have a great Halloween. Enjoy your tour.

    Can I link your copycat?

  9. LHdM: I highly recommend The Social Network! It was a lot better than I was expecting. And then you can join me and D-Med for some coffee talk about it.

Rad: You can blame my photographer for the out-of-focus chips. Actually, we tried, but since it was on white paper, it wouldn't show up.

Cynthia: I've been wanting to be Palin for the past few Halloweens too! I could totally pull it off, even down to the terrible accent. I wish she wasn't relevant anymore though. And actually, another costume idea was to cover myself with tea bags and be a Tea Bagger.

D-Med: Fella and I were just talking about this last night, about how Jones' character is there to remind you at the end that no one likes Zuckerberg. In case you somehow didn't get that after 2 hours of watching him mostly be an ass. And personally, I'm a fan of JT in any capacity (that's only a little embarrassing to admit), and I definitely enjoyed him.

SU: Why of course you can! Hopefully someday I'll do a real, non-Halloween copy cat. But I don't even know where to look for inspiration. Tips?

  10. you DO look like Liz Lemon. and perhaps, boyfriend should read Advanced Style on "peak moments" in one's style life. Boyfriend may be stuck in Zuckerberg style for the next 40 years!

  12. What a great idea. Did you, too, experience a faux pregnancy due to sole de solidad-related estrogen spike? I love that show (not as much now as before, but still), and you being Liz in this costume (now, and always).

  14. What an awesome costume. I also enjoy that it allows you to cart around sabor de soledad/ doritos. A costume with snacks is probably the world's greatest costume.

Haven't seen The Social Network yet but the various Stylenation endorsements has made me want to see it.
