Bracing

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of meeting up with fellow Brooklyn style bloggers, Jesse.anne.o and (vegan indie)WhatIWore. They were both really lovely and we got vegan ice cream and checked out the consignment shops in the Lower East Side. It was fun to meet with folks who know a lot about you through the interwebs.

I picked up these red suspenders, something I've had my eye on via Ebay and Etsy, at the Buffalo Exchange. They have some minor signs of wear, but I am super stoked. I plan to wear them with a grey pencil skirt, black pumps, and a blouse in the fall to teach. Maybe not on the first day though. (I may chicken out. Stay tuned for updates). Today, they make up part of my second attempt to be colorful, and I think the orange, red, and yellow make work, in perhaps an overly literal way. We are off to take our kitten out for ice cream. It's a long story.

To make a long story short, my 75 year old landlord is a bit nuts and thinks she's in love with me. And therefore I avoid talking to her at all costs, and including neglecting to inform her of our kitten. Today, there are inspectors coming so we are hightailing out to a yogurt place by the park, kitten in tow. The awkwardness of the situation was made apparent to me last December, one month after moving, when she called me at home and insisted I come to her apartment, where she built me a fire, told me about our past life together, and sang me a bad song:

This really happened. I am not creative enough to make this stuff up.

  1. Ooh, colorful AND sassy! I have very similar yellow shoes, but don't wear them nearly enough. I should get on that.

And I guess at least your landlord wasn't that weird smell earlier this year, right?

  2. I like the color combination and the suspenders are great.

The story about your landlord is hilarious, but I can see why you would want to avoid her. I can't believe she sang to you!

  3. O h my goodness- 1 it's awesome that you got to hang out with Jesse.anne.o and (vegan indie)WhatIWore.,

    2. Those suspenders will look *hot with a pencil skirt.

    3. That story! It's hilarious but creepy!

  4. I second everything La fille d'or said. I'm impressed you remembered what you were wearing that night.

  6. 'Nice pops of colour, Rad. And your illustrated story is creepy but hilarious. I always worry that I'll be too distracted by hilarity to take the creep factor in creepy-funny stories seriously. 'Good to know you're avoiding that crazy woman!

Also, I wonder if these suspenders wouldn't also rock with some very tough footwear, jean shorts, and a white T?

  7. A-dubs, I think you're onto to something. This is definitely something Lizbeth Salander would wear!
And everything worked out well. We met a friend for kitty in the park time. He was very good (and took a nap on the car service ride home).

  8. Wow. Way to rock the colour, dude! I love the suspenders. When I was in high school I had a pair of black ruffled suspenders with little rosettes on them and I wore them backwards--because they seemed to fit better that way--with a billowy peasant shirt and jeans. I was once v. cool but I'm not sure I could pull that off now. You, on the other hand, totally can.

And I love your drawing of the creepy anecdote, especially your cartoon expression.

  9. Your landlord sounds a lot more entertaining than mine; I'm still giggling about the drawing.

Love the suspenders! I've got a pair that I keep meaning to do something with, and now you've inspired me.

  10. Your landlord situation is horrifying but (forgive me) sort of hilarious. The comic is amazing too!

  12. That picture says it all...
Last night, my son and I saw this really cool looking dude with red suspenders, I kid you not. We planned on purchasing a pair for my son the next time we were out. And here you are, completely rocking the look. Saweeet.
Ooooooo, I just picked up the first two Larsson books for vacation...don't tell me.

  13. do you own converse? those suspenders would be so classic with a pair of chucks, jeans, and a hanes v neck tee
before I go, grit&glamour wore suspenders, backwards like DMed, on a recent post. It was cool.

  14. @DMed: I bet you are still cool enough for any kind of suspender combo. In fact, I'd love to see you in some.
@Audi: I look forward to your suspenders post!
@SU: I'll check out G&G's post. I don't have converse but I totally should. I do have a pair of navy canvas slip ons that somewhat invoke converse, however. Thanks for this suggestion. I agree that a simple white tee with the suspenders, as A-Dubs also suggested, would rock.

  15. Okay I am behind on blog-reading but it was so nice to meet you guys "IRL" and that comic is slaying me. Especially your facial expression in the comic. The whole story reminds me of Notes on a Scandal's premise (but not nearly as creepy).

Good call on the braces, also!
