Style risks

This is no Lady Gaga outfit, but when I left the house this morning, I wasn't quite sure of this outfit.
The sweater, which is a size large, was acquired at a recent swap. I like it a lot. It's tunic like, the sleeves are interesting, and the white is really bright. But I haven't figured out how to wear it.
I was rushing around this morning, and I thought this might look OK with pants, but I wasn't quite satisfied. I low-belted it, added a berry scarf, and thought, "Maybe?" and ran out the door.
I have a black blazer in my office in case I decide that I hate it too much to wear when I lecture. Is the black and white too stark? Does it work? Any thoughts would be deeply appreciated.

Pants: Uniqlo (in Korea), about $30
Shoes: Naturalizer, $40
Black button down: Uniqlo, about $30
Belt: GAP (years ago), $25
Scarf: Collecther, (vintage), $12

  1. Remove the "questionable" label, because that outfit works. Black and white is perfectly okay - it's so classic! I can't believe you're not swimming in a large sweater, but it looks really great. You should try the top + belt with a pencil skirt - I'm thinking that might look nice too. And the scarf is a nice touch. Overall a great outfit! :)

  2. I agree - I think it totally works. Without the scarf, it'd be less inspired, but that shot of berry is perfect.

  3. I am hesitant to give alternate wearings because I think what I feel comfortable in differs from what others do and vice versa!

I really like the sleeves - they look very '40s to me (not bell enough to be '70s, but more prim) and the neckline and would want it "waisted" but if I used a belt then the white bottom part would probably not hit low enough on my hips to not make me look cut in half. So I'd likely keep this pairing of the turtleneck and tunic and tuck it into a high-waisted skirt?

    Nice swap find!

  4. Jesse, the tunic idea is brilliant!
Thanks for all the comments, folks. My coworkers liked it too (including the one who invited me to the swap. She was wearing a swap jacket with a mandarin collar). I guess this was an experimental outfit win.

  5. The black and white look sharp together. The touch of berry softens up the look just a bit. Great overall effect!
