Mixing patterns

march8 072, originally uploaded by Cohabitating_Closet.

Lots of fellow bloggers have had great luck mixing patterns, like Elaine of Clothed Much and A. of Academichic (just to name a few). I am so timid about patterns in general. This is as close as I've gotten thus far. Patterned black tights with a patterned jersey dress. It's an example of one of my "fast fall back outfits" for teaching (or anything): jersey dress, cardigan, tights, and boots/booties (with a belt if I'm feeling adventurous or want to be more tailored).

my version of "daring"

I never thought twice about the appropriateness of this outfit for work, where there are lots of young men aged 18-24. But today, I was walking by a table of dudes who were hanging, and one of them shouted out, "Professor!" I know him, said, hello, and I heard one of his friends say, "Damn, is that a professor?" I looked in the mirror and tried to figure out if the outfit is too "sexy." I am covering up all the major parts, other than that elusive collarbone (the dress isn't too short, the jersey isn't too tight), so I decided that maybe I just look good today. Nothing wrong with that, professor or not.
Happy St. Patrick's Day to my Irish and Irish-at-heart friends. And thank you for all the lovely congrats and well wishes on our wedding. Getting back to normal life has been harder than I thought, but the teaching week is thankfully almost over.

Dress: H&M (3 seasons ago), sale ($15)

boots: Born

belt: thrifted

cardigan: LOFT

tights: Target

  1. Professor! You DO look good! Maybe they were thinking you look way too young to be a professor. Most of mine were old, tenured and pretty crotchety, so I would've been surprised to see a professor who looked like you too. Or maybe they're all turned on by the new ring ;)

The outfit looks great though. I don't know how pattern mixing should be done, but stripes with stripes works.

  3. I have had students ask me what my major is (thankfully not students in my classes) and I've decided it's because I am so hip and chic and preternaturally youthful and not because I am inappropriately sexy. I think the same is the case for you. That dress is rad, Rad. And I like the subtlety of the pattern-mixing in this outfit, like a Mona Lisa smile.

As for the RL closed-toe lovelies: 7.5, a bit narrow. They are yours if they will fit; think of them as a wedding gift, but just for you. (Though Blokey can wear them if he wants to, none of my business, really.) I can send you more pictures if you like. They are very versatile, part sandal and part shoe but really too narrow for my Fred Flintstones but I cannot resist a bargain.

  4. All my pattern mixes are pretty tentative. I think this is a great start. Soon you'll be all about plaid and houndstooth!

And I think you look 100% awesome, but not at all hussy-fied. Maybe they just couldn't believe someone so stylin' was a prof? (Which is silly, as we know - there are loads of stylish folks in academia.)
