Office Maxi?

06/13/11
So you know earlier this spring it was a big deal for me to try out a maxi dress for the first time in several years. Seriously, it's the biggest thing that's happened in my world lately. Anyway, today I took that daring sense of sartorial adventure one step further by *gasp* wearing a maxi dress to work! No one at the office actually cares what I wear, but the style still feels a little casual for an office setting. But I didn't have much of a choice. It's still a little chilly here today, so my knee-length skirts and dresses seemed not quite weather-appropriate. And I have yet to locate a pair of dress pants that fits. I'm sure there's a pair somewhere among all the boxes, but all of the pants that I packed in my "summer clothes" box are a bit snug. I'll blame that on a steady diet of eating out, snacking and beer coupled with not exercising over the past couple of months. I plan to finally get back to the gym tomorrow now that things have settled down a bit at home, so hopefully that pants thing will work itself out soon. Surprisingly, I feel just fine about the way I look now, but I'm always a bit annoyed at myself for working hard on diet and exercise, and then just totally throwing it all away, like I don't know how that will end up.

But I digress. How was your weekend? My parents visited from Ohio over the weekend. Although my mom and I did plant some flowers and I did a little bit more unpacking, it was nice to slow down and just relax after the past few weeks.

Dress: New York & Company (remixed)
Sweater: Ann Taylor
Flats: Born (or flat - where did my left foot go?)
Necklace: Target

  1. You look wonderful no matter where you go. And I see that you are having fun with flowers on your deck. I'm glad you're enjoying your new place.

  2. I think if your office has a casual or business casual dress code, it's fine. I see a lot of them here, but we work at a very liberal art college so almost anything goes really.

  3. What a beautiful dress!  I really like the black and white graphics and accessories.  I look you look great but I know that pants fitting issues can be a bummer. I gained a few pounds myself over my birthday weekend.  We can hit the gym together this Sunday, eh?

  4. The dress looks really pretty on you, and it definitely looks office appropriate.  I loathe pants-fitting issues.  So uncomfortable.

  5. Pants in general are uncomfortable.  Although my dislike of them in warmer weather has lead to me being surprised about weight gain once fall rolls around more than a few times.

  6. As long as we don't go too early on Sunday! :)

  7. We're technically casual, but I think moving back toward business casual.  It's hard to know what's actually appropriate sometimes.

  12. All your flowers look wonderful.  And I don't think this dress is too casual at all - you look great in it.

  13. I agree - maxis do feel really causal for the office. My office is very casual as well, and i've contemplated wearing one, it does make sense given how cold it usually is in there!

I hope the pants work themselves out. I'm horrible at keeping up exercise. Give me two weeks and I'll be so far off that wagon I'll forget what it even looked like.

  14. I really like the looks of this dress--especially as posed amongst the flowers.  Its hard to stick to good eating habits when so much of your life is in major transition.  You may find that the added inches magically melt away, as things grow more settled.

  15. I love this dress! The print is really quite pretty! I say DARE to dress differently in the office! I'm always up for a little shaking it up, every once in a while! :) and I feel you on the "diet" thing. I find that it's easier if I take it one step at a time. Like, one day, I'll just give up junk food. Then the next, i'll give up something else.

  16. I agree, shaking it up isn't all bad!  I got a TON of compliments on the dress, so who cares if it's appropriate or not :)

  17. I'm a big stress eater, so it makes sense that I'd put on a few pounds during something as stressful as moving.  Let's hope for pounds melting away!

  18. You should try an office maxi too!  I got more compliments today than I ever have on anything else I've worn to work.

  22. I thought that too!  I have a colorful floral one that I think I'll save for non-office days.

  23. I love the pattern and cut of that dress. I still can't figure out exactly why maxi dresses have such a casual vibe, but it's true that they don't work in many corporate offices.
