Wheels of Fire
Remember this skirt? Yeah, it was so awesome, I couldn't help but get another one. And look! I can finally wear yellow! But that's not the coolest thing I've gotten lately. This is:
I got a bike! It's a Schwinn Cream 3 speed. I didn't totally splurge here. A couple weeks ago, our old landlord called and reminded me about the security deposit from our old apartment. I had totally forgotten about that. So once we got it back, I decided to finally buy myself a bike. I've wanted one for riding around town pretty much as long as I've lived in Chicago, but just never got around to it. Fella is currently getting ready for a race with biking, running and an obstacle course, so he just brought his bike out from his parents' house. So now I can ride with him.
I just got back from my first ride with Cream. I was a little shaky at first, since it's been years since I've actually been on a bike (the last bike I owned was a pink 10 speed with spokey dokes). Here she is in the neighborhood square (Rad may recognize this fountain as being near the gelato place and pastry cafe we were at last week).
And here she is at the park. One thing I didn't consider while getting dressed today was the logistics of biking in a skirt. I don't know how gals like Gracey do it. I think the entire neighborhood saw my off-brand Spanx this afternoon. But it's cool, I had fun anyway.

Awesome new bike! I never did very well biking in skirts either, but Gracey seems to have it figured out. Your bike is looking pretty good, posing by the fountain and fence. Your bike might need it's own blog!
ReplyDeleteI am soooo envious of that bike! I love that it doesn't even look like it has gears. Gears always mess me up.
ReplyDeleteYay!! Your new bike is awesome, I'm glad you got such a nice treat for yourself. You and Cream will be great together.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure about cycling in a skirt either - but I did totally ride my bike in my flouncy shorts the other day and i loved it.
I legit haven't biked for over twenty years. Does that stop me from drooling over your bike (THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I WANT!) and coveting it and wanting to buy one myself, despite certain injury to life and limb? No. Not at all.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it had been almost that long for me too! I got my pink 10 speed for my 10th birthday, and outgrew out after a few years. But riding a bike really is just like riding a bike - it comes right back!
ReplyDeleteIt has 3 speeds, but I haven't needed more than the first speed in the city. Fella advised that I get more than 1 speed though, so we can bike around suburban parks.
ReplyDeleteHa! If I didn't already have 3 blogs going, I'd consider a bike photo blog.
ReplyDeleteI think I may have been okay in a less flowy skirt, and on a less windy day. I'll have to give shorts a try!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful skirt, awesome bike!
ReplyDeleteThat is one fab skirt! I love the colors you've used in your outfit! On to bike-talk. I am probably the only person who doesn't know how to ride a bike. OK, I CAN ride a bike, I'm just very scared to actually ride it going somewhere. Also, I have to ride a kids' bike because I'm an acrophobiac. Your bike (Cream, did you name it?) is gorgeous though!
ReplyDeleteYour bike is so drool worthy!
ReplyDeleteAs for outfits, jesse.anne.o recently had a blog spot about bike wear, and I know that "Let's Go Ride a Bike" (Chicago based!) has some great cycling style advice. I usually wear shorter skirts, and some hot pants or bike shorts underneath (that come off when I reach my destination.) I biked yesterday in short denim shorts. I also like wearing leggings and tunics. Happy cycling! (I wish I could bring my bike to Chi-town- we could have Muppets-movie style bike dates. Le sigh).
I love how you posed cream in different places... Have fun riding around the neighborhood this holiday weekend!! You look great in that skirt. I almost ordered it, but it was out in my size!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the new bicycle! It will give a whole new perspective to your new neighborhood. There must be a trick or two the bikers at Academic Chic could recommend.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the recommendation, I'll check them out! And just tonight Fella and I stumbled upon a secret river path, so I'm sure there's all kinds of gems to uncover.
ReplyDeleteIf you check back, they periodically get it back in stock, and I think I've seen them in the stores too!
ReplyDeleteMuppet-style bike dates would be awesome!
ReplyDeleteI'm a little bit afraid of heights myself, but the bike doesn't bug me (though I do have a slight fear of wiping out in the middle of a busy street!)
ReplyDeleteJust found your blog. I just got a new bike too, it is a bright white schwinn!!!! Now If only I could get off the couch and ride it. I admire how you just jumped right on!
ReplyDeleteI am so envious - the bicycle is gorgeous!

We have so little nice bike riding weather here, I had to take advantage of it :) Get out there and ride!
