It's only the second day of teaching this semester, but I've gone more casual than I would have ordinarily. But the black hopefully maintains the "serious" vibe, although based on what I saw students wearing on the walk from the subway (beach gear, mostly), I will probably still look vaguely professional. I just didn't want anything that fit too well, so luckily this skirt gapes a bit at the waist, and this shirt isn't too fitted. Plus, I try not to be scary/authoritative in the classroom. Not because it's difficult for me, but because I'm really good at it, so I try to avoid it unless it's absolutely necessary (they quake in their boots when I pull it out).
My Brooklyn apartment drama is not yet resolved. Our lease is up October 31, but since my crazy landlord is in the process of selling (and someone has made a conditional offer- I guess he/she doesn't mind the broken glass, the arson, loud music, and general hubbub of the neighborhood), she won't let us know if we're homeless until maybe the end of next week. (Just for the record, I don't mind these things. Even the sad dead rat on the sidewalk yesterday).
Ah, the many joys of urban living.
Hope everyone has an awesome (and itch-free) Wednesday.
Edit: You should know that I have been thinking about bedbugs lately, and my fear of them, when getting annoyed about possible moving. They're in the news AGAIN!

Black shirt: H&M
Skirt: Billabong (via Cliche)
Shoes: 9 West
I think you still look very professional and not scary at all :) Love the stripes on your skirt.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your apartment drama!
So far, yes, Wednesday has been itch-free. ;)
ReplyDeleteI love the stripes in the skirt, too. You look classy and professional.
That apartment drama stinks. You're handling it MUCH better than I would.
I am the rare grad student who doesn't teach (all research baby, all the time), but if I did, I think I would probably be the same way. People frequently tell me that I come off as powerful or authoritative. I suppose that would be maximized if I were standing in front of a class.
ReplyDeleteThe Brooklyn apartment craziness sounds so lame! How can they leave you hanging like that?
Love that skirt! This outfit is excellent, and does not read as casual at all.
ReplyDeletePolished casual is something you pull off quite well, Rad. My classroom yesterday was so hot. By the end of the 75 minutes, I had soaked through my linen shirt and linen pants and the students sitting there in their beach gear looked as if they'd been squirted with a hose. Thursday--still predicted to be hot--I'm taking them on a field trip.
ReplyDeleteI think that you've found a good balance between casual and professional with this outfit. Very cute.
ReplyDeleteYour outfit looks very polished, albeit a little casual. I love the qualification of it not fitting too well, and I wish I could rock slightly ill-fitting clothes as well as you!
ReplyDeletenon itchy wednesday over there- unless itching to get out of the office counts! Summer is finall here in the bay and beachwear sounds good- only not on the subways...That skirt is really great.
ReplyDeleteAs for:
"I try not to be scary/authoritative in the classroom.
You don't seem that scary :)
@Eek and La Fille: I was so icy and "business" during my first class back in the day that they really did not like me or find me approachable. I'm glad that I don't give that off as much anymore!
ReplyDelete@Emily: I'm actually not handling too well, but I am trying!
I think this outfit is completely fine for the classroom.
ReplyDeleteI'm really, really sorry to hear about the apartment drama, Rad. That is such a pain in the ass to have to deal with.
Hi Rad, I agree with all the comments. You are doing the pro/cas very well. I might need to copy it next week.
ReplyDeleteOh, stupid apartment drama. Mike and I are looking to move but on our own timetable. Don't move out of the city if you can. I hope all ends well.
Hold on, Rad! And since you're THAT good at putting the fear of you into your students, a little casual attire is not so risky for you. Also, I love that skirt. The blue applique is such a great detail.
ReplyDeleteAlso, your landlord/s is/are idiotic. I wish them all a boatload of bedbugs if they make you move. They can suck it.
