School's Out

School's out, originally uploaded by Cohabitating_Closet.

... (but not forever)
Today is the last teaching day of the semester. I am both happy and a little sad. I actually really like my students most of the time, which is the result of hanging out with them and learning about how they are cool. I don't consider myself to be very maternal or patient by nature. I'll miss some of them, but I'll be teaching my first master's level class in the fall, so I won't likely have any of them again until next spring.
For the last day, I wanted to go for light but professional. It's supposed to be in the mid 70s, and I would go bared legged, but microfishnets are easier than shaving while half asleep. This outfit is in response to AW's post at In Professorial Fashion, and as you can see, I am OK with relatively short skirts, especially on the last day. While I dig the nautical aesthetic of this outfit, I am wearing a slip that has been folded down a few times. I'll have to do some quick work with safety pins when I get to school (I have those in my office as well as moleskin, and extra pair of tights, emergency stash of snacks.)
From here on out, it will be Rad's research, almost 24-7, with 2 final exam dates. So lots of casual wear and travel outfits until late August. This might sound good, but there's possible furloughs (work with no pay!) and the pressure to publish is pretty huge, so I do covet other people's 9-5 jobs sometimes.

Jacket: UO (2003)
Striped shirt: H&M
Skirt: H&M, thrifted
Microfishnet Tights: Daffy's
Black flats: Ecco
Belt: Thrifted

  3. Fantastic last impression outfit!

The final day of teaching is always bittersweet. I remember being so disappointed when a prof or instructor didn't give a schpeil to help memorialize that final day so I always have a brief song and dance about gratitude and the community we forged. I hope your final day goes great!

  4. Ahhh, furloughs. We get one here at the U come Christmas. Yay.

This is a great playful-yet-professional look for the last day of classes.

  6. Huzzah! You are simultaneously rocking that skirt and teaching me about the awesomeness of short-skirts-in-which-to-teach. Also, the combination of nautical stripes with fishnets is inspired. Congrats on making it through the term!

  7. I love the nautical theme here. I hope that you do enjoy your break. Our office is going through rounds of furloughs as well - so even us 9 to 5'ers aren't safe.

  8. Yay! The end of term arrived! I hear you on the pressure to become a publishing machine. My bum is still in my seat on this project that should be Off. My. Desk. Anyway, I hope you can take a little break to celebrate and before the exam-marking sets in. That outfit is too too cute to stay inside (but also, of course, professorial).

  9. Yeah, now you have to be a publishing machine in my field to even have a chance at most tenure-track jobs. *sigh* I really wanted to be done with the diss by now so I could get another article underway.

I love the skirt, though! And yay for time to focus more on your own research! I'm still not sure if I'm teaching a summer term course or not at R1 school in the first session before I leave....

  10. Sorry for the double comment, but I just wanted to reply to you. I've taught two summer 5-wk term classes in the past and they are a blast. I am torn because I really want a break. I'm exhausted from all this dissertating, commuting, etc. However, I could use the money to pay for the move and a few other things....
