Better in theory

Better in theory, originally uploaded by Cohabitating_Closet.

So this outfit worked better in theory. By that I mean, it looked awesome in my mind. But even in this very early morning picture, it seems a little off. But then, walking about 20 blocks in the Lower East for doctor stuff, I realized that the shoes were all wrong (too cold weathery), and that using a stretchy belt can not save all too big in the waistband skirts (I've heard that this is a frequent issue for women). The skirt kept falling out of the back. Oops. The sleepy face is because I stayed up late to prep. Thank goodness outfit posts show me what my laissez faire hair is doing lately. (Mental note, give Giovanni* a call.)
Luckily I have three pairs of shoes in my office. Yeah, I'm like the crazy "shoes in my office" lady (they hang out with my blazer, a scarf from Target, and a coat that I didn't take home once because it got hot. Can you tell that I love having my own office?) I planned a cuter outfit in response to Academic Writer of In Professorial Fashion's call for an outfit with special details, but that outfit is too warm for high 70s and sunny. I'll do a better one soon!
On a happier note, I bought pattern number 3, the clear winner. I may make one that is just below the knee so I can strut around, feeling like a quasi military B.A., but maybe it'll be so much fun, I'd to a shorts version in a knit!

Embellished Skirt: Billabong, via Cliche
Belt: from Presence, Chicago
Booties: Me Too from DSW
Shirt: H&M (very old)

*My very non posh, $30 hair cut dude on the Upper East Side. Saying that makes me feel more New York than I am.

  1. I'm sorry to hear about the skirt-related malfunctioning, 'cause that bad girl looks so great! Is that a little blue flower up by the waistband? Can we have a close-up of this detail?

Also, I may pass out from envy re: the weather in your neck of the woods. It's rainy, blustery, and cold here and will be for the remainder of the week. I shall be living vicariously through your warm-weather ensembles.

  2. That skirt is so cute, so it's betrayal is especially vile.

  3. I agree, what's the blue business going on? I like the outfit - can you do something about the skirt fit problem? It's a great skirt otherwise :)

Oh, and I have at least 10 pairs of black shoes in my bottom desk drawer since I don't wear anything but tennis shoes or flip-flops while commuting. Many, many people make fun of me for that.

  4. Yep, it's a blue applique! It's super cute but because the skirt needs hiking up (I used to think everything should hit me at the hip), it's obscured. I'll try to post a pic after teaching my night class. I'll also if if I can fiddle with the fit (the waistband would have to be totally redone, and there is a great lining too).
I have silver flip flops to commute in. Everyone in NY seems to have them (but they also have better toes than me. Hmmm. NY is making me feet-vain).

  5. I love the skirt - the applique and the seams! I'm a total "pick out the outfit the night before" kinda girl because often when I look at it with fresh eyes in the morning, I realize I need to tweak the shoes or belt or whatever... I totally have 2 pairs of shoes, a huge grey cardigan, a coat, and spare umbrella in my office... sometimes you just need things!

  6. I think this looks wonderful, but I know what you mean about "infrastructure" issues affecting how you feel about an outfit.
