Happy Mom's Day

So for all my grandstanding, I ended up not wearing my planned in the morning outfit to the work party. Mostly because I planned my day badly and did not have enough time to run home from the office to Brooklyn and back to Manhattan. But we had a nice time, one of those nice work social things where I thought, "damn, my colleagues are awesome."* Also, after a few glasses of wine (on their part, not mine), I learned that my coworkers think of me and Blokey as "The Hipsters." (I suppose this mean that weirder and younger looking clothes are in order for non-teaching functions).

In honor of Mother's Day, this post is a shout out to my mom (who hates the internet). Just as when I was very small, I continue to think my adorably and petite mother is one of the most beautiful women in the world. My ma definitely has her own cool style. Until she hit around her late 40s, she incorporated many elements of her "single" period, the mid 1970s, into her everyday style. She liked chunky tall heels, costume jewelry, earth tones, reds, fun hair, and double lined eyes (She still does that last part.) She's the ultimate accessorizer, with great skin and an amazing smile. I just love pictures from when she was around my age the best.

Until I started fussing about it, my mom dressed me in adorable colorful clothing. Here, she's wearing a cute poplin woven pink shirt dress. It's my first birthday, which is this huge eat-a-thon in Korean culture, and she made enough food to feed 50 people and celebrated in their student housing apartment in Madison, Wisconsin.

Here, my mom sports a fun feathered fringe 'do, kicky boots, and an awesome prairie style shirred jumper, with six month old me as an accessory. (My poor dad, first year in grad school, has a face that says, "Getting a PhD sucks." They're at his advisor's holiday party, which explains the candy cane scarf). She's mixing a light blue cowl neck with a burgundy dress (complete with rickrack and embroidery)? So much bolder than me. Time period: last days of the Carter administration.

She's so thrifty and imaginative (and always very thin) that she was remixing this dress 5 years later. Here, she's looking all windblown and effortlessly chic, somewhere on the NoCal shore, with nude strappy wedges, a coral necklace, and a classic black turtleneck.

*Not that I'm saying the higher ups are not fine people, but their absence, which was unusual, made the whole thing much more relaxed. Lucky us.

  1. I could definitely see your co-workers thinking you guys are hipsters if they're just basing it on appearance. That makes me chuckle a little :)

Great tribute to your mom! All of the sweet Mother's Day stuff out there is making me really glad I'm going home this week.

  3. Thanks! She was too busy to chat much today but I'll pass along the admiration.
Also, I need to stay up late to make up for the time I spent making the new logo this morning. Powered by open source image editing software. (Just like a fake hipster to be all DIY).
