B*tchin' Camaro

When my young, single mother first came to the US, she worked hard on her English, passed the registered nurse licensing test, and worked in Arizona as a nurse, making something like $5/hour. After a while, she saved up some money and bought herself a Camaro, and posed in front of it in an outfit very similar to this one, back in 1975. The jeans were a bit tighter and higher waisted, the sunglasses bigger, the shoes were cork instead of stacked rubber soles, and the shirt may have had some embroidered flowers. She sent this photo to a young man, a pen pal introduced by a minister, who later became my dad. When I wear any outfit like this, my mom just kind of shakes her head about the way fashions repeat themselves (but she's flattered to be my style icon).

Today is the last day of exams. I am of the mindset that it's fun to dress casually during exams, since projecting authority isn't as big of a deal now (this may come back to haunt me, but most of the grief I get now is via email). I like these old jeans, which feel as thin as paper and breezy as linen. I didn't wear them for a couple years because dark denim was so prominent. I almost cut them into shorts but Blokey told me they were too nice. I'm glad I listened.

Shirt: H&M
Jeans: BDG (2003)
Necklace: street vendor in Hawaii
Scarf: via Ebay
Shoes: Aerosoles (thrifted)
Sunglasses: DKYN, Macy's (via Mom)

  1. Clearly, you mom kicks ass. You come by it honestly! Love the delicate blouse with broken-in jeans.

  2. I love this look--so cool and laissez-faire but so style-y. Your mum is an excellent icon and kind of kick-ass if a camaro was her chosen accessory for this look.

    Hope the exam-grading goes quickly!

  3. Way to keep rocking those scarves! I LOVE your hair like that!

Technical question - do you use anything to keep them in place? I've worn scarves like that, but they always fall out, and very quickly. I'd love a quick option like that in the morning, especially since it's getting hot here!

  4. Anne: They fall! Especially when it's windy. Sometimes, they transform into ascots.
I am considering getting some bobby pins to keep them in place. Anyone else have suggestions?

  5. Eek, sorry you have the same problem! I use bobby pins for my gym headbands and it works pretty well, but it doesn't look all that cute.

I like this look on you. Relaxed, yet super stylish.

  7. I love it - so classic cool, the white shirt and jeans! I really wish my mom had kept some of her old clothes... some of them just never go out of style!

  8. You look so chic. I wish I could pull this off because it is so classic and elegant casual but I tend to look messy because of my amplified clumsiness whenever I'm wearing white.

  9. I love your interpretation of classic Rad's Mom. And that you put your own, unique stamp on it.

  10. Well, it's actually a classic look so no wonder it's come back around. I LOVE it on you.

  11. Ok. That story about your mom is so fucking cool.

I also like to wear jeans or especially crazy tights or a weird hat when I go to give a final exam.

And blokey was right, those are great jeans. I wouldn't touch 'em!

  13. What a great story! That reminds me I've got to dig out an old photo of my mom in the 60's; it's a look I've long wanted to emulate.
