Greetings from Frankfurt

Frankfurt is an underrated city. I fell in love with Berlin back in 2005, but Berlin is like the crush I had on the dirty punky left wing boy with the eyebrow studs and stinky hoodie when I was 19. Frankfurt is like that less obviously exciting dude that you'd introduce to your mum, who is still bohemian and but can clean up nice and hold a job. Blokey and I have been enjoying our quasi-escape from New York/fake honeymoon. We return tomorrow, but first we'll squeeze in a few more experiences. (There was talk of running through wine country over at In Professorial Fashion this weekend. We may have spent 36 hazy hours in German wine country over the weekend, gawking at castles from the river and buying bottles and bottles of local wine for then an €7 a pop. I usually don't drink but I pretended to be as awesome as D-Med and A-Dubs for a day or two).
I don't have much to offer style-wise, except to say that being in Europe for a week has made me more comfortable with capsule style dressing. Our awesome hosts have well edited closets but still very well defined styles, and wearing the same thing multiple times in a week is no big deal. I didn't stick to my 6 items, but I have been overwearing the stripey shirt and black boots from Monday's outfit over and over again.
Finally, Blokey has learned some German (danke and Sheiße, which are very important), is a big fan of the windows, Turkish snack stands, the transit system, and the bread, but remains skeptical of the German shelf toilet. You really have to see it to believe it.
We arrive back in NY tomorrow morning, and start teaching soon. I highly recommend a European-just-before-the-semester-starts-getaway. We'll be waking up at 4 AM for the next week.
Bis später!

  1. Yay, you're almost back! I probably would've still introduced Berlin to my mom, but just out of teen angsty spite.

But anyway, glad to hear you're having a good trip! I didn't even realize there was a German wine country, but wine and castles sounds pretty great. Enjoy your last day there, and have a safe trip home! :)

  2. We're going to have to create a profesh organization so that we can go to wine country to run and/or drink and service credit for it in our tenure reviews.

I had completely forgotten about the German shelf toilet! I guess that means I need to get back to Germany soon. Hopefully, thechemist-coture will get a post-doc there and grant my spring break wishes.

    Safe travels home, Rad!

  3. Glad you had a good time! I've never even been to Frankfurt, though it's a mere 2 or so hours from Luxembourg where I grew up. Frankfurt makes me think of banks and newspapers, neither of which I'm hugely excited about. But maybe I should reassess.

And also in defense of my nationality, I would like to point out that those toilets are by no means a German thing only. I remember seeing them in France, Italy, Spain, The Netherlands and Belgium, at least! (have I just outed myself as a humourless German?) Now those French standy-uppy toilets though, they really are bizzarre! ;-)

  4. So glad you're enjoying your vacation!!

I had no idea these toilets existed! Now I am completely intrigued and disappointed that my German class ended this past Thursday. I can imagine a highly entertaining conversation with my German instructor in regards to them!

    Tschuss!

  5. I tend to assume that Europeans have a corner on the design market, but I was never able to rationalize this particular one, which the Finns also use. Not a selling point.
The article you link to is hilarious. Thanks for posting it.

  6. That toilet is insane - and potentially anxiety producing, especially if one has to use said toilet in the house of friends with whom one wants to remain friends. Enough said.

Your vacay sounds wonderful, and I'm happy to hear that D-Med's and my tendency toward intoxication is having a positive effect on you. We're very, very proud, Rad. Very proud.

    Also, welcome home!

  7. I am totally skeptical of the shelf toilet. I have seen (and used) them and remain utterly unconvinced.
