Lost and Found

05/18/11
This weekend while combing through my many boxes of old clothes hanging out in my basement, I stumbled upon a few pieces that I can't for the life of me figure out why I would have packed away.  This dress was one of them.  I came upstairs with an armful of clothes that I was eager to try on and reacquaint myself with, and each time I would ask out loud why on earth I had made these clothes stay in the basement (Fella, amused with this, said he didn't even try to understand my thinking on stuff like this).  But of course, I was asking Past Anne.  Seriously, what was she thinking?  This dress fits, is super comfy, pretty cute and even in line with my current color pallet.  Yet it's been in the basement since we moved into this apartment in 2008, and I'm fairly certain I haven't worn it since at least 2007.  I can't believe it, but I think this was purchased at a time that I wanted to wear dresses, but since they weren't in fashion quite as much, I didn't.

Things that I could easily work into my current clothing rotation were few and far between, and a majority of the clothes I had are being donated to various charities around town.  However, there were a few special items that I want to find good homes for.  Are you in the market for some cute stuff that is way too small for me now?  If so, take a look at my closet and drop me a line.  I'm really bad at shipping things in any sort of timely fashion, but I guarantee they'll be mailed before June 1st, because if I don't give them away here, they're being donated before we move.

  1. Cute!  That's how I felt about that packed-away box of sweaters and things that I found over Christmas.  Why did I hide this stuff away?  Although, with those sweaters it rapidly became apparent why I didn't like to wear them...maybe the dress will show its true colors somehow.  Or, maybe it's just a bonus dress!

  2. Sometimes when I look at things I packed away, and think I still love them, I have trouble reacquainting them with my current wardrobe, but I hope you love end up reloving your old clothes just as much the second time around.

  3. This is a great dress! I love it when I find random gems packed away in my basement. I rescued a printed cardigan and tunic earlier this year. It's like shopping, only better because it's free.

  4.  Yes. What was Past Anne thinking? This dress is lovely on you: the colour is gorgeous next to your face and hair, and it hugs your shape beautifully. I never have the same luck with my packed-away wardrobe items. But I live in hope, and your story keeps the hope alive.

  6. I wondered about that!  But wasn't sure if yours was new and I just hadn't seen it at the stores yet or not.

  7. Past Anne had no idea what she was doing, yet she had the sense to at least buy a cute dress.

  8. I don't wear it often, but I bought it in 2007.

  9.  Don't you just love when that happens? Every time I travel back to my mom's house I love to go through the old clothes I have left there for one reason or another.  I do a little commentary in my head "I bought this at the beach in '06, Oh, I remember this top I wore it to a horseshow in Fl, So and so bought me this after graduation etc etc" It's a fun trip down memory lane

  10. Fantastic find!  I never find such good stuff in packed away places.  I'm really liking the dress over capri-length leggings on you.  In fact, I've almost bought a similar pair myself several times at Target to be further like you and then remind myself that it's 90 already here and I probably don't need an item that will make an outfit slightly warmer!  In the fall, however, I'll be all over it.

  11. Strangely enough, the 4 year old dress does fit in pretty well with my wardrobe.  Though there were definitely a lot of items in the donation bags that don't.

  12. Free shopping is the best!  I still have a few more boxes to go through, so who knows what other treasures are hiding in the basement?

  13. See, the danger of me doing that is my mom asking me when I'll finally get all of my stuff out of the house.  And I've only been gone for 8 years :)  But I definitely associate a lot of my clothes with specific memories.

  14. That would be a great matchy-matchy look for us in the fall!  Speaking of, I've been breaking in my E-Jo Birkenstocks this week.  I LOVE them!

Anne, the dress is fabulous--I just went through all of my under the bed bins and rather than having finds like that, have found any number of items for theSalvation Army.  (Not necessarily my charity of choice, but super easy since a friend works there and can drop off my stuff and bring me my tax receipts.  Also, I must say, I am in full agreement with E-Jo about the tights.

  16. Ooh, I think I need some under-bed bins when I move!  And I think I will have donated at least 6 giant garbage bags full of clothes by the time all is said and done, so this is definitely a rare find.
