Post-Election Bliss

02/23/2011
Back in November, I wrote about election blues.  I'm sporting blue today, but thrilled about the results of Chicago's election yesterday.  I'm really excited about my ward's newly elected alderman, 30 year old independent Ameya Pawar.  Chicago definitely has a rough political history, but it's refreshing when someone young who isn't a machine politician gets elected.  Rad wrote about the attack of unions in Wisconsin and my home state of Ohio yesterday, and the GOP is waging war on women, so with all of that going on, it's nice to feel hopeful and optimistic about something in politics again.

Political stuff aside, I'm channeling my inner Style Underdog here with the shades.  Not just so I, too, can look chic, but because the sun actually came out here!

So I have to admit, as much as I love this skirt, I had a really hard time styling it.  Anymore, it seems like the trend is pencil skirts, so there's not a lot of examples out there of how to style a pleated A-Line skirt.  Do you have any suggestions?

  1. Hmm, I think a) you are working that skirt and b) Angie said that maybe not so much on the pencil skirts being an overwhelming trend. So don't give up on it. What you did with it here looks great and I bet you've got many variations on this theme.

I'm feeling a little grumpy about politics, lately. I think we need a revolution, although the target should be the John Boehners and Scott Walkers of the world, not the President.

  2. Hi. I love your outfit. It is just right for you. And I am glad you got your candidate into office. I am still holding out for common sense in politics. But it doesn't seem to be very common.

  3. Well, I think you styled up your skirt quite nicely!

Yay for a breath of fresh air in politics! I've been feeling all doom and gloom for the past couple of weeks.

  6. I like how you styled the skirt here - the blue striped blouse is perfect with the blue cardigan. I really love this look.

I'm kind of a rabid moderate independent when it comes to politics, but I was happy with the mayoral election.

  7. I like how you've styled the skirt here - very nice! I'm wearing a skirt today too - topped tucked in and cardigan.
That's great about the election - It's nice to feel positive about politics for a change. I spent some time in Ohio a few years back. I once had a suitor from Ohio!

  8. Nice work here, Anne. Another way o style the skirt would be to have a boxy, hip-skimming pullover sweater or top, maybe 3/4 sleeved. Since I'm so short-waisted, I'd probably go this route rather than tuck in the shirt, but the tucked shirt looks great on you.

  9. I really like this outfit on you! I often wear a-line skirts and I just about never tuck things in. I really like a slightly longer shirt, not tucked in which gives a sort of dropped waist look that I like on me -- and since I'm tall and relatively short waisted I don't think I end up looking all that stumpy. But, generally, I find the a-line skirt to be pretty forgiving and tend to style it like I do pants.

Glad to hear a note of political optimism! Like Cynthia and LHdM, I've been finding it hard to see anything particularly promising.

  10. I love that blue cardigan on you - the color is just gorgeous.

I rarely wear pencil skirts, most of mine are A-line, but I don't usually wear pleated A-line skirts - I have to watch the volume around my thighs. But, I think tucking in the blouse, with a hip-length cardign is the way to go. It defines your waist perfectly.

  11. With a full skirt or A-line, I usually do a slim-fitting top. I like a cardigan done up (with top and bottom couple of buttons undone) and then belted over at the waist.

  13. A little late to the game here, but I freaking love this outfit! The skirt is so flattering on you! The pin is pretty cool too.

    Really great outfit.
