Baby steps

DSCF6447

It's true.  I'm wearing jewelery today.  With color.  And I don't know how I feel about it.

DSCF6443

Over the weekend, after hanging with Anne and her Fella, my lovely sister-in-law gave me this pretty silver, green and gold murano glass charm necklace.  I thought it would add a bit of color of my usual neutral outfits.  But I remain unsure of the execution today.  It seems not bright enough to go with the dark colors.  Maybe this would have worked better with a lighter (white?) background?  Help me before I descend in a jewlery free place again.

StyleNation, I'm stumped.  Would a longer, silver necklace like Anne's be better with this outfit?  Should I leave the jewelery-mixing to the experts?  (I'm looking at you, Ephemera, ladies of IPF, Cynthia, and countless others).

  1. Colorwise, I think that pendant is a great highlight for your current outfit. The problem you're having is that the necklace is fighting with the neckline of your buttondown. If it were longer it could go around and below the collar opening, and it would not fight so much, or if you wore it with a navy top that did not have a button down collar, even just a plain crew neck, the necklace could be free and happy.

    Otherwise, though, this look is great, and the necklace goes well with your neutrals.

  2. I think what would help was if the colours og the necklace were picked up elsewhere, like with brown colours, or a coppery/gold belt.

    a silver necklace would work well with this too.

  3. I love the grey and black here, and the cut of the pants with the belt.

  4. I think the necklace looks great. It adds some nice color, without detracting from your personal style.

  5. Yep, Cynthia's got it. The length with that neckline is either too short, or too long.

    But I really like the necklace, and I think it does go very well with black. And the necklace is very Rad-like, so good gifting on your SIL's part :)

  6. I'm feeling the color on that necklace. It adds some pop to your outfit. Maybe you can wear a longer necklace with it to call attention to it and then naturally draw the eye to the bit of color on the pendant?

  7. I like the colors on the necklace and always appreciate a pop of color, but I think the necklace needs to be longer so it's not lost in the v of your shirt.

    Those pants look fabulous on you - that cut is perfect!

  8. I am the worst at necklaces. Luckily my outfits are usually already kinda spazzed out so I don't need more layers of crazy. I do love the tiny stripes today and the casual fit of the pants!

  9. The colours in the necklace are all warm colours (brown, green, orange), but you're wearing all cool colours.

    The necklace also evokes swirly, nature-based patterns, and you're wearing solids and a geometric.

    These could all work together (but it would be tricky), but I think the two colour mixes/styles are fighting a bit. I don't have an issue with the neckline.

    With a bunch of blacks/greys, think of solid or bold colours to pop off and catch the eye. With a necklace that's autumnal and organic-looking, go more femme and wear warm colours (something with another pop of green or orange would be fab).

    Don't give up, Rad! You look great.

  10. Props to you for trying something outside your comfort zone!

    This is a great necklace, and this is a great outfit. They don't scream All Wrong together, but it's clear you're not quite satisfied with this.

    Both Cynthia and Sheila have listed reasons it might not quite work, so then it comes back to you: are you unsure because the necklace compete with your neckline, or because it seems like too much contrast with your outfit?

    Socratic method = no help at all, I know.

  11. I think your necklace works, annie's certainly would as well, and quite a wide variety would work -- you could wear a long pendant, or some short layered bright beads, even with the shirt buttoned up all the way and a bib necklace over it...

  12. I have nothing to add the stellar necklace advice others have already offered. I must, however, offer a solid "Good Goddess! Those trousers look freaking awesome on you!"

    Also, hee! The kitty paw reaching under the door is yet another excellent element of this photo.

    Can we have a Buster and Lula update? Are they cuddling together on the sofa yet?

  13. I also have nothing further to add in the necklace advice category. It's an awesome necklace though. For reasons that seem counter-intuitive, I actually find it easier to wear non-pendant necklaces. I'd say that 90% of my necklaces fall into the beaded category. I think it's because I find that pendants are often a little more delicate than I think works for me, if that makes any sense at all.

  14. I'm no jewelry expert, but based on the pics, I think the grey was a good choice to highlight this bit of color. Wondering why you don't wear much jewelry?

  15. @Cynthia: Thanks! There wasn't a way to adjust the length much, so a new top it is.
    @Franca: I think you're right. It felt vaguely clashy.
    @Gina: Thanks. Old Navy's finest! (2001)
    @Rebecca: Thanks, but it still felt a little awkward.
    @Anne: Maybe it would look better against a simpler background- like a one color dress?
    @Laura: Great suggestion. I have very little jewelry, but that's something to think about adding.
    @Gracey: Thanks Gracey!
    @Future Lint: I know- jewelry kinda scares me.
    @Sheila: That's exactly it. I need more warm in the outfit. Although I thought that green and silver were "brights", but the yellow/gol throws it off. Confusing!
    @Julia: Thanks!
    @K.Bean: Yes- Cynthia and Shelia have good points. I think I'm just not comfortable with sparkly things that have weight hanging off my neck. The spakrles in specific.
    @Lyddie: I will consider a bib necklace for the future.
    @A-Dubs: Thanks. I only own really one pair of dress pants (the others I ruined with a hemming experiment but I may fix soon). Lula and Buster are like rivalrous siblings, that occasionally lick eachother (for about 2.5 seconds, before more rasslin' begins).
    @E-Jo: Yeah, the pendat is a challenge. My S-I-L is very jewlery and saprkly oriented, but I have little experience with it.
    @Terri: I think I don't like the heft. I am allergic to most metals and so anything that isn't pure gold makes my skin turn green. Also, I am clumsy and I've broken/lost/misplaced so much jewlery that it's really too much of a fuss for me.
