Heat and Dignity

Today is the third (or fourth?) day in a row that it has been mercilessly hot, around the high 90s. We're talking heat advisories and air quality warnings alerts. I know southern types might find this unimpressive, but certain aspects of the city make heat worse at times (subway stations, crowds, concrete). Blokey's fair skinned and cold loving parents are still here, and yesterday we planned a day around cool places: the Met, a couple cab rides, this adorable Japanese silent film (which was cute but included very stark social criticism), the Staten Island Ferry, and lots of water. It's so hot out that we even ran the A/C (at 84 degrees, of course) last night. (My work's A/C gave up yesterday morning, and they had to cancel classes and move staff around. I'm glad I played hooky). I have A/C guilt (I'm a Stan Cox convert), but as soon as it gets below 90, we'll turn it off.
When the heat goes up, my ability to care about dignity goes down. But I am trying to maintain non-embarrassing, but breezy, dress. I cut these shorts from a pair of summer weight thrifted slacks, and had the good luck of thrifting a seersucker floral shirt as well. The sandals are from my ma, so this is a $5 outfit. Not too bad for freakin' hot.
Hope you all are staying cool!

Shorts: GAP, shortened by me, thrifted
Blouse: thrifted
Sandals: Aerosoles

  2. You're running your A/C at 84? Geez, and here I was complaining that it's 84 in our apartment with the air on! We finally moved the big A/C unit upstairs (when I say "we," I mean Bob) and it's set at 68. Not that it'll get anywhere near 68, but I guess I lack the A/C guilt.

Your outfit looks very cool and breezy, so perfect for the weather!

  3. It is too hot to care about clothes but you look cute as usual.

We have a bedroom a/c but everywhere else in our house is so swamplike.

You are like me with the thermostat. In the winter it never is set above like 64 and in the summer when I had a digital a/c to set, it was never set below the 80s.

  4. I hold out on the a/c until it becomes clear that I've become an unproductive, crabby human being. Since I work at home, I have to obey federal guidelines (joke) and keep things temperate. I've moved out of my study--hottest room in the house, but great sunlight in winter--and am now working at the dining room table. Steps away from the a/c. It's awful here, but nothing like Philly & NYC. Good luck.

  5. eep! heat wave. good for the beach or lake, bad for the city. But you look cute and comfy and Buster is adorable :) he is still so tiny! Our kitty seems to have grown overnight- all she does is eat and sleep and groww!

    Keep cool!
